Public opinion regarding marijuana is changing rapidly. Consumers, the government, and big businesses are beginning to change their opinions. Some big supermarket chains will begin selling marijuana products in the near future. You’ll learn more about that below.
Why would supermarkets in Canada want to begin selling marijuana products? Well, the laws are about to change big time. Canada is on the verge of legalizing marijuana across the state. That has encouraged many businesses to enter the marijuana market.
One of those companies is Loblaw Companies Limited. This is the biggest Canadian supermarket chain. This would be the equivalent of Walmart entering the market in the United States.
The decision by Loblaw definitely has marijuana supporters cheering across the country of Canada. The company said in a statement that 23 of its stores had been selected as qualified applicants and will become licensed cannabis retailers.
Some of the stores are located in Newfoundland. The company offered further details about their plans for selling marijuana. It explained that it would not be placing recreational cannabis products on their shelves.
Instead, the company will be selling adult-use marijuana products from behind the counters. They’ll be sold in the company’s existing tobacco shops. These shops are actually separate from the Dominion grocery stores. Initially, it might seem odd that the company would jump on board.
However, it is also true that Loblaw has always worked toward innovation. Therefore, it should not be a real surprise that the company would join the market just as cannabis is set to be legalized.
Walmart And Cannabis
In the past, it would have been unthinkable to believe that Walmart could actually start selling cannabis products. Well, that is now a real possibility. Last week, it was reported that Walmart had been toying with the idea of bringing CBD-based products to some of their stores.
At this point, it is clear that Walmart will not be putting dried marijuana products on their shelves. Instead, it is said that the company may soon begin selling other CBD products, including oils, pills and capsules. These items could soon be placed on the same shelves as Tylenol and Benadryl.
Just remember that it is a rumor at this point in time. Walmart has not yet confirmed that it would move to sell these products in their stores. And, it should be noted that Walmart will only be making the change at their Canadian stores.
Again, this has to do with the fact that Canada will be legalizing recreational cannabis in the coming days.
Walmart Hemp Products
Another thing to note is that Walmart has made some progressive decisions during the past few years. The biggest employer in the United States has already made the decision to begin selling hemp products online.
Since they’ve already done that, it is not so farfetched to believe that the company could start selling cannabis too. The hemp products sold by Walmart are much different. Hemp oils and such contain very little THC and large amounts of CBD.
This means that they’re not capable of producing a high. Instead, it is believed that the CBD could be beneficial for treating many health ailments.
Walmart Canada’s spokesman recently spoke out on the issue. They admitted that Walmart Canada had indeed done from preliminary fact-finding on the very issue. However, they went on to admit that the company did not have plans to carry CBD products at the given time.
Walmart may jump into the game unexpectedly. Or, the company might wait it out and see how other companies fare before joining in.
What The Future Holds
Cannabis laws are changing across the world. One only needs to look at Canada to see the changes from themselves. There is a real possibility that America will eventually follow in suit. If that happens, there is a good chance that big supermarket chains like Walmart, Krogers and Target will be forced to join the crowd and begin selling CBD and cannabis products.
After all, it is estimated that roughly $5 billion could be added to annual revenues thanks to the sale of cannabis. These companies will not want to miss out on the action. Loblaw is one step ahead Walmart, but you shouldn’t be surprised if Walmart doesn’t chase them soon enough.
